Overview Councils

Every two years, the students of the University of Ghent get to choose their representatives. This way, their interests get defended in the university’s most important Councils and commissions. There are three Councils for which students can stand as candidates during student elections: the eleven faculty Councils, the Social Council and the Board of Directors.

Central Councils

These Councils function at the central level of our university .The decisions that are made here have an impact on the whole university. Do you want to make a change across the borders of the faculty? Make sure to stand as a candidate for the or the Social Council!

Board of Directors (Raad van Bestuur)

The Board of Directors constitutes, together with the College of Administration, the highest operational level. In the Board of Directors, you receive the opportunity to pull the strategic strings. The decisions made here concern education, research, service, personnel and the budget. In other words, you determine the big outlines of our university.

Here, four candidates get elected including two with the minority gender.

Social Council (Sociale Raad)

The Social Council advises the Governing Council concerning social matters. The items on the agenda consist mainly of student facilities and other social affairs, such as the meals in the university restaurants and the quality of the homes. The Social Council consists for half out of students and is the only body that is chaired by a student. Four students will be directly elected for this body in the upcoming elections.

Faculty Councils

The eleven Faculty Councils account for the daily management of a faculty. In concrete, this means that at these Councils, decisions are made concerning e.g. the appointment of lecturers, the advisement of the university regarding the adjustment of the study programmes or the admission requirements of certain programmes, etc. For the student representatives represented in a faculty council, this means that they represent the opinion of the students about all issues decided upon at faculty level. For example this could concert the drawing up/approving of the exam schedules, whether or not an admission exam gets established, the advisement about possible changes to the programme, the advisement about the appointment of certain lecturers, etc. As a student representative in the faculty council, you make sure the opinion of the students gets heard in the organisation of the programmes at your faculty.
